A mother of a one-and-half year-old girl was strangled to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at the Shreepur union of Boalkhali upazila in Chittagong on Tuesday night.
The victim was identified as Priyanka Dey, 24, wife of Riton Dey, 37, said Boalkhali OC Shamsul Islam.
Riton was an expatriate and had returned from abroad a few months ago, said the OC.
Police arrested Riton, his father Doyal Hari Dey, and mother Jorna Rani Dey from a private hospital in Chittagong city in this connection, added the OC.
Quoting Priyanka’s family members, OC Shamsul said the couple had married four years back and the family member’s in-laws used to torture her for dowry after marriage.
On Tuesday evening, Riton rushed his wife to the private Holy Health hospital in the city’s Panchlaish area in critical state, where on-duty doctors declared her dead, said the OC.
Later, Riton informed Priyanka’s family that she had committed suicide by hanging herself.
The OC said Priyanka’s family nabbed the three at the hospital, suspecting their behaviour and informed the police. Later, police arrested the trio for interrogation.
The body was sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy. A case was filed with Boalkhali police station in this connection.
Meanwhile, Hathazari police recovered the body of a sexagenarian from a ditch at Farhadabad union of the upazila.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Towhidul Karim of Hathazari police station said a local had spotted the floating body of an unidentified person aged about 60 years old and informed the police.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to CMCH, said the SI.
