Jubo League leader Md Mollah Arif, who was gunned down in Khilgaon on Wednesday, was not murdered for political reasons but killed because he had refused to do something illegal demanded by his killers, the police have claimed.
Khilgaon police station Officer-in-Charge Mostafiz Bhuiyan said Arif’s death was surely not a political killing, rather an ordinary killing case. But the exact motive could only be figured out after proper investigation, he added.
The OC said no one has so far been arrested in connection with the killing.
Md Mollah Arif, joint secretary of Jubo League’s ward number 2 unit, was shot by some five to six people near Jorpukur Math area of North Goran yesterday evening.
He later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11:50pm, said Sentu Chandra Das, assistant sub-inspector of DMCH police outpost.
Before losing his consciousness at the hospital, Arif was able to mention the names of Shuvo, Mithu, Arif and Imran as perpetrators who had been among the five to six people who had shot him, ASI Sentu said.
When contacted, Khilgaon Sub-Inspector Fakhrul Islam said Arif – a cable operator in the area – had been shot while returning home on a rickshaw.
Asked about the names mentioned by Arif before his death, the SI said one of those suspects – Shuvo – might be same Shuvo who was the science and technology affairs secretary at Jubo league’s ward number 8 unit; however, further verification was needed to make sure the two were the same person, he added.
Meanwhile, Amena Begum, the mother of the deceased, has filed a murder case with the Khilgaon police station accusing seven persons.
