A suspected robber has been killed in a gunfight with police in Joydevpur Bazar area in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur.
The deceased was identified as Mukter, 35, son of late Akram, a resident of Konagram of the upazila.
Locals said Akram was also a gang leader who was lynched by villagers at the time of robbery in 2007.
Alfadanga OC Mizanur Rahman said the villagers caught five robbers including Mukter around 8:30pm on Sunday and later handed to police.
Following statements of the gang members, police along with robbers launched a drive in Joydevpur area to recover arms and ammunition.
Sensing their presence, the other gang members opened fire and hurled bombs at police around 2:30am on Monday, forcing them to retaliate, that triggered a gunfight.
Mukter and four others got bullet-wounded during the gunfight while Mukter died on the spot.
The injured robbers – Papiar Sheikh, 32, Harun, 40, and Yaruk, 42, – were taken to Alfadanga Upazila Health Complex while another injured Zakir, 32, was admitted to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital.
The body of Mukter was sent to FMCH morgue for autopsy.
Three policemen – Sub-Inspector Mahmud Hossain Molla, constables Subrata Kumar Bishwas and Lukman Hossain received minor injury and got aid from Alfadanaga Health Complex police said.
Police recovered one pistol, one shutter gun, 11 crude bombs, three bullets and three sharp weapons from the spot.
