Shisha worth Tk54 lakh seized in Chittagong airport

Chittagong customs authorities have seized 30kg of Shisha from luggage in a cargo plane which arrived from Dubai on March 5 at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong city on Sunday.

Chittagong Customs office Assistant Commissioner (AC) Selim Reza, who is deployed at the airport, told the Dhaka Tribune that they started rummaging through the cargo of an Emirates Airlines plane following a tip-off, and found the banned imported items after scanning a luggage.

The seized Shisha, worth Tk54 lakh, would be confiscated according to the customs act, while legislative measures would be taken as per as the law, he added.

On March 3, the same customs team seized 87kg of Shisha worth Tk1.57 crore from a flight of Air Arabia from Dubai.

Shisha, the flavoured tobacco, which is smoked through a long pipe connected to a vessel filled with water.

According to the World Health Organisation, a one-hour shisha session can be as harmful as smoking 100 cigarettes.
