A Chittagong court yesterday sent 62 activists of Chhatra League’s Chittagong University unit to jail, who were detained from Shahjalal and Shah Amanat dormitories after a factional clash on the campus a day earlier.
Judge of Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Kudrat-e-Elahi sent the activists to prison after rejecting their bail petitions.
The court also said the next hearing would be held on February 22.
The 62 men were produced before the court around 5:30pm, said Court Inspector Anu Mong.
The university authorities formed a four-member committee headed by Professor Dr Abdullah Al Faruk, dean of Law Faculty, to probe Sunday’s incident, said the proctor, Siraj Ud Dowla, yesterday.
The other members of the committee are Professor SM Monirul Islam, provost of AF Rahman Hall, Professor Dr Md Rashed Un Nabi, provost of Abdur Rab Hall, and Md Yakub, assistant proctor of the university.
The proctor said the probe committee was asked to submit a report as early as possible.
Sunday’s clash broke out between two Chhatra League factions - Varsity Express (VX) and Choose Friend with Care (CFC) - over occupation of Shahjalal Hall. Four Chhatra League activists were injured in the clash.
Meanwhile, two Chhatra League activists of the VX group were shown arrested in the case filed over the 2014 murder of Tapos, a CFC man, yesterday.
Kawsar Mia and Sohel Khan were attacked during Sunday’s clash by their rivals. Police later rescued them and sent them to a local hospital in Hathazari.
Sub-Inspector of Hathazari police station Habibur Rahman, also the investigating officer of the Tapos murder case, said the two were accused in the case and had been on the run since then.
Tapos Sarkar, a first-year student of Sanskrit Department, was shot dead on December 14 last year during a clash between the VX and the CFC on the campus.
