A microbus of police has been vandalised during chase and counter-chase between the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men and Shibir activists at Chittagong University (CU) campus on Tuesday night.
However, no causality was reported in this connection, said police sources.
Md Salauddin, Inspector (investigation) of Hathazari police station, said the incident occurred between a faction of BCL men of CU College unit and the local Shibir men at the Hill Bottom Colony area, known as stronghold of Shibir on the campus, at around 6:30pm over a trifling matter.
Witnesses and campus sources said a group of junior BCL men belonging to CU’s BCL dissolved committee’s joint secretary Diaj Irfan Chowdhury, went to the colony where the Shibir men chased the BCL activists over previous rivalry.
As the news spread among the followers of the Diaj, a group of 20 to 25 BCL men of CU unit from Shah Amanat Hall led by Md Mamun, former sports affair secretary of CU BCL unit, rushed in and counter-chased the local Shibir men with sharp weapons and sticks, said campus sources.
A chase and counter chase took place during the melee while both of the groups pelted stones and brick chips, targeting each other, said Inspector Salauddin.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said the police official.
But the microbus carrying police was vandalised by pelting stones during the melee.
Diaj Irfan belongs to Chittagong Awami League (AL) city unit general secretary AJM Nasir Uddin, said the campus sources.
Contacted, Diaj Irfan said Shibir men chased his junior men over political rivalry while the CU BCL men tried to save them.
