A ward-level leader of Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Mirpur on Saturday night.
Emdad Ullah was the president of ward 93 unit of Shibir, his family claimed. He was a honours first year student of Dhaka College.
He was detained by police at a check post in Mirpur 10 area on Saturday evening with two Molotov cocktails, OC of Mirpur police Md Salauddin said.
In primary interrogation, Emdad said Shibir men had a stash of bombs at a mess house in the area. A police team went there and arrested 11 persons with Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs) and bomb-making materials, he added.
After the drive, the 11 detainees were sent to the police station while Emdad was taken to Rupnagar Beribadh area to nab his other cohorts around 11:15pm, the OC claimed.
As they reached the entrance of Ena Properties, some miscreants from a white microbus hurled crude bombs and fired bullets at police prompting them to retaliate, the OC said.
During the gunfight, Emdad jumped off the police van but fell on the road receiving gun shots by his cohorts, Salahuddin said. At one point, the attackers fled the spot on the microbus.
Later Rupnagar police took Emdad to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical state. He was declared dead there.
Two policemen also sustained injuries in the incident, the OC said.
Victim’s elder brother Hedayetullah received the body yesterday from the Dhaka Medical College morgue following a post-mortem examination.
Chhatra Shibir, however, claims that Emdad was killed by the law enforcers intentionally.
