Man killed in Santal-Bangalee clash over land dispute

A man was killed when a group of Santals clashed with a section of Bangalees over a land dispute in Parbatipur upazila in the district yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Md Sohag, 30,  son of Jahurul Islam of Sarkerpara village in the upazila.

Sources said there had been a long standing feud between Jahurul and the Santals in the area over 48 bighas land.

In the morning, around 25 Santals attacked Sohag and workers with local weapons when they went to irrigate the land.

Sohag was killed as an arrow pierced his body, locals said.

Rabindranath Saren, general secretary of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad claimed the Bangalees carried out vandalism and looted Santals’ houses during the clash.

Mostofapur UP chairman Matiur Rahman also denied the allegation.

 On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Mahmudul Alam, officer-in-charge of Parbatipur police station. Around 60 ethnic minorities live at the village.

A police camp was set up in the area after the incident.

19 ethnic people were arrested in this connection.
