Jisan Bahini leader killed in RAB ‘gunfight’

Update : 23 Jan 2015, 07:52 PM

A former Chhatra Dal leader of Lakshmipur has been killed in a “shootout” with Rapid Action Battalion in Comilla, who police claimed was a wanted terrorist.

Solaiman Uddin Jisan, leader of Jisan Bahini and son of Abu Bakkar of Paschim Latifpur village under Chandraganj union in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, died in a gunfight at Daulatpur in Daudkandi upazila late Thursday night, according to police.

Sub-Inspector of Daudkandi Model police station Enamul Haque said RAB had signalled Jisan, who was on his way to Lakshmipur from Dhaka on his motorcycle around 2am yesterday, to stop but Jisan attempted to speed away and also fired two rounds at the law enforcers.

“RAB responded by shooting back and Jisan died on the spot after receiving bullets. A foreign-made firearm was recovered from him,” our Comilla correspondent quotes the SI as saying.

Enamul said Jisan was accused in 44 cases, including gun battle with police and four murders.

But Superintendent of Police in Lakshmipur Shah Mizan Shafiur said Jisan was accused in 11 cases, including killing and assault on police.

Daudkandi Model police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Salam Mia conceded that Jisan had died in a gunfight with RAB but officials of Comilla Crime Prevention Company 2 under RAB 11 could not be reached for comments.

RAB Director (media) Mufti Mahmud also said Jisan had been killed in a gun battle.

He said Jisan had been signalled to stop while crossing a RAB check post in Daudkandi but RAB chased him when he did not comply, reports our Lakshmipur correspondent.

“He shot at RAB, forcing officials to shoot back. His body was later found there lying on the ground,” added the RAB director.

Organising Secretary of BNP’s Lakshmipur unit advocate Hasibur Rahman Hasib said Jisan was the former library secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Lakshmipur unit.

Jisan was expelled from his post back in 2004 after he had got involved in terrorist acts, says Our Comilla correspondent.

Lakshmipur police were also said to have announced bounty on information leading to Jisan’s arrest.
