Update : 15 Jan 2015, 03:38 PM

Fish traders have beaten a man to death, suspecting him a fish-thief in the sadar upazila's Dighapatia Bazar area on Thursday.

The deceased is Shafi, 40, son of late Kori of Adarshagram village of Dighapatia union of Sadar upazila.

Locals said a group of local fish traders picked Shafi up from his house in the afternoon for his alleged involvement with theft of fishes from a local pond two days back.

Later, the mob led by Natore Municipality Commissioner Mostaq Alam Vutto took him to Uttara Ganabhaban and beat him mercilessly in presence of local UP member Mokbul Hossain Montu.

Critically injured Shafi was rushed to the Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police station Faridul Islam.

“Additional police have been deployed in the area and action will be taken against the involved after investigation.”

Locals alleged that while beating Shafi up, the fish traders declared that they would beat all the fish-thieves to death in the area.

In order to find out the fish-thieves, they also formed a 58-member “Fish Thievery Prevention Committee,” said the locals.

When contacted for remarks over the issue, Mokbul Hossein Montu refused to make any comment.
