Customs officials seized six gold bars weighing 700 grams at Shah Amanat International Airport in the port city on Friday morning.

The value of the seized gold bars is estimated at Tk30 lakh.

Mashiur Rahman Mandal, assistant commissioner at Chittagong Customs told Dhaka Tribune the customs officials recovered the gold bars after searching the luggage of two passengers from an Oman airways flight from Muscat.

The flight landed at the airport around 8:30am and customs officials found the gold bars after searching the luggage of Rahim Uddin and Nurul Haque, he added.

Later, the passengers were released.

The Customs officials said: “They were set free as they were not smuggling the gold. But the authority seized the gold bars as they violated the rule.”

“They can get back their gold after paying fines and duties,” he added.

Normally, a person can bring 200 grams of gold without paying any extra fee or duty.
