Police rescued a schoolgirl on Wednesday who was abducted allegedly by her maternal aunt in Bheramara upazila under Kushtia district.
Identified as Urmi, 12, daughter of Akmal Hossain of Barodag village of the upazila, she was rescued from Golapnagar Solaiman Chisti Mazar area and later admitted to Bheramara upazila health complex in a vulnerable condition.
Officer-in-Charge of Bheramara police station Parvez Islam said Urmi’s aunt Asma Khatun, 25, had abducted her on Wednesday in the afternoon while she was returning home from school. Hours after the incident, Asma and her accomplices phoned Urmi’s father and demanded Tk100,000 as ransom.
Being informed by the victim’s family, a team of police raided Golapnagar Solaiman Chisti Mazar area and rescued Urmi and detained Asma from the spot.
Abandoned by husband, Asma used to live with her father in Golapnagar village in the upazila. Asma fed Urmi some sedative which left her ill, police said.
A case was filed with local police station against Asma and two to three unknown people in this connection, said the OC.
