The High Court yesterday granted bail for an accused in connection with the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
The bench of Justice Md Nizamul Huq and Justice S H Md Nurul Huda Jaigirdar passed the order in response to a bail petition filed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the case.
The court however did not cite any bail period for accused Tanvir Rahman, who was arrested on October 1, 2012, during the pronouncement of the order.
Tanvir’s lawyer Fouzia Karim Feroz told the Dhaka Tribune: “Tanvir’s name did not come up in the first information report of the case. Besides, there is no specific charge against him until now in the case. Accordingly, it is illegal to keep him behind bars in the case.”
When she was asked for how many days his client had been granted bail, she said “The court did not cite it and so we cannot confirm it unless we get the full copy of the order.’
Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder, who moved for the state side, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We will appeal against the order in the Appellate Division after receiving the order copy.”
Tanvir, a friend of the slain journalist couple, is now in the Kashimpur high security prison.
