Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) authorities have suspended a constable of the city Special Branch following his arrest with 1,595 yaba pills in his possession on Monday.
The suspension order, signed by SB Deputy Commissioner Faruk Ahmed, was issued on the same day against the arrested – Constable Bashir Ahmed. The Dhaka Tribune acquired a copy of the order.
According to the order letter, a team of police led by Sub-Inspector Manjurul Kader arrested Basir on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway at Fashiakhali area in Chakaria upazila, Cox’s Bazar around 12:40am on Monday following a tip-off.
Bashir was dressed as a civilian when police found him, and later, the team recovered the yaba pills from his possession. He was in a car, and police arrested the driver, Zahir, as well.
Later, a case was filed in this regard with Chakoria police station under the Narcotics Control Act, the order letter said.
SI Manjurul said Bashir collected the yaba pills from Cox’s Bazar and were on their way to Chittagong when they were arrested. Police have yet to find out whom Bashir had collected the pills from in Cox’s Bazar.
Chakoria police OC Prabhat Chandra Dhar said they would seek remand against the duo to collect more information about their yaba peddling circles, routes and patterns.
Sources at the CSB said Bashir, who is from Chandpur, was often absent without leave from his duty, especially recently. He was also absent on Sunday, the day before he got arrested.
