Hasnat denied parole, fails to see dead father

Update : 04 Nov 2016, 06:58 PM

Gulshan cafe attack suspect Hasnat Reza Karim could not attend his father's janaza as the Home Ministry rejected a petition for his parole.

Hasnat's father Rezaul Karim died on Monday and the family appealed to the government the following day so he could pay his last respects.

Sharmina Parveen, Hasnat's wife, said: “We appealed for his parole but were denied. My father-in-law was buried today [Friday] after the midday prayers.”

The family alleged that even a convicted war criminal like Delawar Hossain Sayedee was released on parole to attend his son's burial. "But someone who is not even proven guilty has been denied the humane chance to see his father for the last time.”

Hasnat and his family members were among the hostages released before commandos stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery and killed five terrorists on July 2. In the aftermath of the attack, his role was questioned after some photographs showed him talking to one of the attackers on the roof of the cafe before the commando operation.

Police showed him arrested in the case nearly a month after his alleged detention claiming that he had been associated with banned militant group Hizb ut-Tahrir and that he had assisted the terrorists during the attack.

International militant group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack that killed 24 people including 17 foreigners carried out by their supporters to avenge the coalition assault on IS establishments in Syria.
