An eight-year-old girl, raped by a transport worker in the capital’s Kadamtali area yesterday evening, has been described by her attending physicians as “critically hurt.”
The victim, a student of class one at a local madrasa, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). She had been admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre but is undergoing treatment in the gynaecology department because of profuse bleeding.
A duty doctor of the department, not authorised to comment to the media and requesting anonymity, said the girl was critically hurt and that her haemorrhaging had not been staunched. We are treating her to stop the bleeding, the doctor told the Dhaka Tribune around 10.30pm.
The victim’s father, a rickshaw-puller by profession, told the Dhaka Tribune that a neighbour, Shaon, 17, who works as a bus helper, seduced the child with toys to his house in the Muslimnagar area of Kadamtali around 3pm and then raped her.
Because she was screaming, Shaon sent her home. The child told her mother about the incident and her parents went to Shaon’s house to protest.
The accused’s parents, Rahim and Parvin, on hearing the accusation against their son threw us out of their house, the victim’s mother said.
The victim was later taken to the DMCH.
Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kadamtali police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that the police had not yet been approached about the assault.
“Our officials at the DMCH will inform us of any such incident,” the OC said.
Hayder Ali, assistant sub-inspector and in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, told the Dhaka Tribune that a girl had been admitted to the hospital around 9.45pm.
“We will advice the police station concerned on the course of action shortly,” he added.
