BNP leader injured in gunfight

A local BNP leader was injured in a gunfight between police and members of his group at Katkhali Beel in Shyamnagar upazila on Friday night.

The injured was identified as Akter Faruk, son of Haji Ashaul Islam, a resident of Kashimari village of the upazila.

Organising secretary of BNP Kashimari union unit in the upazila, Akter is accused in many cases, said police.

Three policemen, including sub-inspector Ashraful, were injured during the gunfight.

Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Shyamnagar police station, said a team of police conducted a drive in the area while a group of terrorists, including Faruk, was holding a secret meeting around 8:45 pm.

Sensing the presence of the police team, Faruk and his associates opened fire at them, promoting the law enforcers to fire back that left Faruk bullet-hit and three policemen injured.

Later, the police team arrested injured Faruk while his other associates managed to escape.

The police also recovered one pipe gun and three  bullets from the spot.

Faruk was undergoing treatment in Shyamnagar health complex under police custody.

He is wanted by police in 16 cases, including for attacking mobile court magistrate, the OC added.
