Four police officials of Tongi police station were withdrawn yesterday for negligence of duty over Friday’s mugging of family members of a dead man in an ambulance at Sataish in Tongi.
They were Sub-Inspector Abdul Mannan, Constable Hazrat Ali, Md Motiur Rahman Matin and Md Abdus Sattar.
Following their withdrawal, they were attached to Gazipur Police Lines, said Gazipur Police Super Harun-ur-Rashid.
A group of muggers attacked the ambulance carrying the body of Shahjahan Talukder early on Friday and took away gold ornaments, Tk10,000 in cash, three mobile phones and his death certificate from the family members.
The deceased was a former employee of Bata Shoe Company Bangladesh Ltd and died at a hospital in the capital.
Shahjahan’s family members claimed police were on patrol near the place the crime was committed but took no action.
They also alleged that police had connection with the criminals as the death certificate and the mobile phones were returned to them soon after they had reached home.
But Sub-Inspector Abdul Mannan of Tongi Model police station denied the allegation and said police had tried to capture the culprits immediately but they managed to flee.
“While escaping, the muggers threw the death certificate and the mobile phones out on the street. We picked those up and returned to Shahjahan’s family members,” he added.
Officer-in-Charge of Tongi Model police station Kazi Ismail Hossain said police were trying to arrest the muggers.
