Police have detained 12 activists of banned outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir from Chittagong city’s Anderkilla Shahi Jame Masjid area when they were distributing their organisational leaflets.
The arrestees are Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Government College students Yiasin Iqbal, 28, and Ariful Islam, 27, International Islamic University Chittagong students Sufian, 27, Raihan, 24, Iftekharul Islam, 27, Arif Mohammad Bilwal, 25, Nur Mohammad, 32, Abdul Kaiyum Sabuj, 30, Mohiul Islam, 24, Ainul Islam, 26, Kamrujjaman, 27, and Mahmudul Islam, 22.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali circle) Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf told the Dhaka Tribune: "Acting on a tip-off, Kotwali police chased a group of Hizb-ut Tahrir members in the area around 2pm after the Jummah prayer."
Sensing the presence of police, the banned outfit’s men tried to flee the scene while police held 12 of them.
Police found some leaflets and a banner from their possession, he added.
They were kept at Kotwali police station till filing of the report at 6pm.
Legislative measures would be taken against them as per the law, said the police official.
