Anti Corruption Commission Chairman M Bodiuzzaman has blasted BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for recently labelling the anti-graft body as ‘Impunity Commission’.
Khaleda Zia had given the commission such a tag with political motivation, but criticism should not be so. It should be constructive, he said yesterday at a programme in the capital, marking the 10th founding anniversary of the commission.
The Anti Corruption Commission was established on November 21, 2004, abolishing the Bureau of Anti Corruption. It however observed its founding anniversary yesterday because November 21 was a weekly holiday this year.
The anti graft watchdog has come in question at different times over its last 10 years since many influential personalities got spared of punishment though there were graft charges against them.
When ACC chief Bodi was asked about this, he said: “As the commission is now taking action against many influential personalisties, including those of the ruling party, some people come down hard on the commission.
“However, we never stopped short of taking action against anybody once we get accurate information against them.”
The anti-graft watchdog had discharged 1598 persons from corruption allegations from January to August this year. There were 904 corruption allegations against people while only 34 cases were filed with police during that time period.
“We take actions according to cases graft cases or allegations against people,” Bodi said.
Dhaka University’s Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman attended the programme as chief guest.
Terming the corruption a social disorder, he said: “Every family should work towards removing this from the society. And only then, it will be possible to root it out from the society.”
“Corruption is now infiltrating into other countries by crossing its border to make it a second home. This picture is really alarming and so the ACC has to do some social responsibilities to stop corrupt people doing further corruption,” the educationalist said.
ACC Commissioner Nasiruddin Ahmed, Secretary M Maksudul Hasan Khan were also present at the anniversary programme.
