The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) along with the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) yesterday jointly started an eviction drive against illegally set up billboards in the port city which have been obscuring the city’s exquisite natural landscape for long time.
Earlier, the CMP has given a three-day deadline to remove illegal billboards, which ended on Saturday.
On the first day of the drive, a total of five illegal billboards were demolished from the city’s Wasa Intersection to Ispahani Intersection from 10:30am to 5pm, said CMP Additional Commissioner (traffic, administration and finance) AKM Shahidur Rahman.
The CCC Executive Magistrate Nazia Shirin led the joint drive while this drive would be continued until the city would be free from illegal billboards, said CMP Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal.
According to the CCC, a total of 422 illegal billboards out of 6,485 billboards are set up in the city’s roadsides and road dividers.
On November 13, the CMP after a meeting with the CCC and Outdoor Billboard Owners’ Association, gave a three-day deadline for removing illegal billboards, placards and posters in the city.
