A girl with speech impediment has been raped recently, allegedly by three members of Doshokia Union Parishad under Kalihati upazila of the district.
Locals and police sources said Fazila Begum, 28, wife of Lal Mia of Dholkan village under Doshokia union, took the 14-year-old dump girl to the union parishad building to bring birth registration certificate on 25 October. Village police Krishna Chandra Das called her into the hallroom. Afterward, Fazila Begum talked to Abdul Aziz of Ward No. 6, Korban Ali of Ward No. 4, Shahjahan Mia of Ward No. 2 and Shahidul Islam of Ward No. 9 and asked them to enter the room.
Entering the hall room, they raped the speech-impaired girl one after another. At that time, village police Krishna Chandra Das guarded the hall room from outside. After the rape, the girl was given Tk 300 and asked to leave the place. At the same time, the rapists threatened her to kill if she disclosed anything else to anyone.
On Thursday, Asma Bewa, mother of the girl, in consultation with lawyer Abul Kashem, filed a case against rapists Abdul Aziz, Korban Ali, Shahjahan Mia and Fazila Begum with Kalihati police station under the Women and Children Repression Act. Police arrested Fazila Begum on Friday morning.
When the incident was exposed, the rapist UP members tried to conceal the incident by paying Tk10,000 to one Abdul Jalil, a local influential man.
Meanwhile, a number of sources said an influential quarter was trying to suppress the sensational rape incident.
They said the Doshokia UP chairman lives in Dhaka permanently and signs in the attendance registrar coming at the UP office once or twice a month.
Kalihati police station officer-in-charge (Investigation) Mahbubul Huq said: “Broker Fazila was arrested after filing the case.”
“However, the accused were absconding. Police have been conducting raids to arrest the accused,” he said.
Fazila appeared before the court yesterday. The girl was sent to Tangail Hospital.
