Agitation breaks out over death of domestic help

Agitators have clashed with police over the death of a female domestic help found in a house at Chotopul area of Halishahar in Chittagong port city.

The deceased is Parveen Akhter, 21, an orphan, lived with her aunt in a nearby shanty town.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Halishahar police station Syed Abu Mohammad Shahjahan Kabir said :"The police recovered the body from a bathroom in the house where she worked at Islam Hazi Brickfield Road on Thursday around 3pm."

Quoting the locals, the OC said Parveen had been working for the couple for some time.

On Thursday morning, the wife of Kamal had scolded and later beat Parveen over missing some gold ornaments, the OC said.

Later, she was found hanging from the window grill by a scarf in the afternnon. Being informed, the police recovered the body, he added.

“We did not found any injury mark in her body. It seems like she committed suicide,” Shahjahan Kabir said.

Kamal Haidar, the owner of the house, and his wife were detained.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) SM Tavir Arafat of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) West Zone said as soon as the news of Parveen's death spread, tensed situation prevailed between the police and they residents of the shanty town.

Somehow, police pursued and dispersed the angry residents who tried to attack the couple while they were being taken in police custody, he added.

The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College morgue for autopsy, the official said.

He said the reason of her death would be clarified after investigators receive the autopsy report.
