Update : 01 Nov 2014, 09:25 PM

The Detective Branch (DB) of police in separate drives in the capital arrested six members of a gang involved in counterfeiting notes, and recovered Tk50 lakh fake notes early yesterday.

The arrestees were Babul Sheikh, leader of the gang, and his acomplices Ferdous Ali, Lutfur Rahman, Md Kabir, Foysal Mollah and Mohiuddin Khan.

They were arrested in different places at Badda and Rampura, said Shaikh Nazmul Alam, deputy commissioner of DB.

Addressing a briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police media centre yesterday, Nazmul said detectives also recovered a large quantity of papers to produce fake notes, security ropes, a desktop computer, three laptops, three printers and other note counterfeiting materials.

“Seven members of the gang were arrested before Eid-ul-Azha and the six were detained based on information given by the previous arrestees. During interrogation, the previous arrestees said the gang comprised some 35 members,” he said.

“We received information that some members of the gang are selling counterfeit notes in Badda. Ferdous, Lutfur and Kabir were arrested there, and they had 50 fake notes of Tk1,000 and Tk100 with them,” he added.

Nazmul said based on information from the three, the remaining men were arrested in Rampura and the rest of the fake notes were recovered from Babul’s rental.

“During questioning, Babul said he had been involved in the illegal act for six to seven years. He also said three groups coordinate to accomplish the task – the first group collects paper and other materials, the second group takes care of the printing job and the third circulates the notes in the market. Tk1 lakh fake notes bring a minimum of Tk15,000 in benefit,” the DB deputy commissioner said.
