Two held over attack on the house of prime minister’s cousin

Police arrested two persons in connection with an attack on the house of Bangladesh Cricket Board Director Sheikh Sohel, who is also the son of prime minister’s cousin.

Sonadanga Model police station personnel arrested Sheikh Shahidul Islam Litu and seized a pistol and two rounds of bullets  from him at Chhoto Khalpar area in Khulna city yesterday, said Officer-in-Charge Maruf Ahmed.

On Thursday night, the law enforcers had arrested Md Shahjahan Kabir Mithu.

The four policemen who had been deployed at the house were also suspended for negligence of duty.

Sonadanga Zone Assistant Police Commissioner Mollah Azad Hossain said: “We have tightened security to ensure the safety of Sheikh Sohel and his family members. Four policemen have been deployed at his house after the attack. Besides, a patrol team led by an SI will always monitor the situation.”

Miscreants fired five rounds of bullets the BCB official’s house on Sher-e-Bangla road in Khulna town around 11:15pm on Wednesday.

Khulna Juba League Joint Convener Hafez Muhammad Shahim said: “Five masked men riding on a motorbike fired bullets aiming at Sohel’s car. One bullet hit the meeting room on the ground floor of his house.”

Sheikh Sohel told the Dhaka Tribune: “I left my car near the Royal intersection area and sent it home. This kind of incident has not happened before.”

Sohel’s cousin Tanveer Hasem filed a case against four unnamed persons on Thursday night.
