Three females, including a minor domestic help, commit suicide in the capital

Update : 22 Oct 2014, 06:53 PM

Police on Tuesday night recovered the hanging body of a domestic help from Chairman Bari area of Banani in the capital. However, the family of the deceased claimed it as a preplanned murder and brought out a procession yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Jesmin Akhter, 14, daughter of Enamul Haque of Netrokona. Sub-Inspector of Banani police station Ashraful Islam said, they had recovered the body around 9.30pm from a house at road 1/A. The body was hanging from the ceiling fan by a scarf in the servant room.

According to the girl’s family, Jesmin had been working at the flat of Mizanur Rahman for the last two and half months. “The employer did not give her food properly and used to torture a lot. Previously, three domestic workers were murdered at the same house. The employer might have strangled her and later hanged the body to show it as a suicide case,” said the girl’s aunt Noorjahan.

However, the employer Mizanur Rahman said, Jesmin had committed suicide due to family conflict.

Investigation officer of the case Ashraful said: “The employer did not permit her to meet anyone. We heard that she used to love a boy named Rafiq. She could have committed suicide due to this issue.”

He added that no signs of killing were found and police was investigating the matter.

In another incident, Salma Khatun, 22, wife of Md Milon Hossain, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, committed suicide in the West Bhasantek area at 8.15am yesterday.

Sub-Inspector of Bhasantek police station Shafiqul Islam said: “Salma used to work as a help at CRP hospital. Her husband claimed that he had found Salma’s body hanging from the ceiling after waking up in the morning.”

“We came to know that Milon was a drug addict. Milon used to beat Salma if she tried to stop him. She could have committed suicide due to this reason,” he added.

Another incident of suicide was reported at Bordhonbari of Darus Salam area of the capital yesterday.

Johora Khatun, 30, wife of Asar Ali of Sherpur district committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling by a scarf. Police recovered the body at around 9am.

Sub-Inspector Khokon Chandra Debnath of Darus Salam police station said, they had suspected the suicide to be caused by family conflict.
