A mobile court in Bhola seized around 81 tons of rice, smuggled out of a government warehouse, from a shop on the town’s Khalparh Road on Saturday night during a raid.
The court, led by the district’s Deputy Commissioner Md Selim Uddin, also detained two men and sealed off the shop named Mssrs Islam Brothers.
Bhola Sadar’s Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mridha Md Mojahidul Islam, who conducted the raid, said the raid was carried out based on a tip-off.
A rice-laden truck was also impounded from the scene. Shop manager Shankar Babu and truck driver Jamal were detained.
He said the shop’s owner, Sangram Mia, had gotten the rice illegally from the Shashibhushan food warehouse at Char Fasson Upazila.
The district food controller was preparing to start a case over the seizure of 2700 sacks rice from that shop, Mridha said.
Bhola Model Police Station Mir Khairul Kabir, however, said no one filed a case until Sunday morning.
