Mugger killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’

An alleged snatcher has been killed in a “gunfight” between local criminals and police personnel at Chagladaha village under Terokhada upazila in the district.

The deceased is Md Babul Sheikh, 28.

Four policemen including an officer-in-charge were also injured in the incident.

They are Terokhada police station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam, ASI Rafiqul Islam and Constables Forhad and Liton.The policemen are receiving treatments in the Upazila Health Complex.

The OC said: “On information, police held three snatchers after the mob beat them when they snatched Tk15 lakh from two villagers on Wednesday night.”

Later, as per the snatchers’ information, police raided Gazirmore area to recover arms, he said.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fired targeting them.

In retaliation, police also fired 30 rounds of bullets on the criminals, triggering a gunfight.

At the time, four policemen and three criminals were injured, said the police official.

Terokhada police station Assistant Sub-Inspector Probir Chakrabarti said: “The on-duty doctor declared Babul Sheikh dead after taking to the health complex.”

The other two criminals are also admitted in the health complex, the ASI said.

However, police could not recover the money from the snatchers.

Four cases were filed in this connection with Terokhada and Narail police stations.

Babul was sentenced life imprisonment in an arms case.
