388 jailed in 11 days for violating Ilish fishing ban

A total of 388 fishermen have been jailed and 393 fined for violating Ilish catching ban during the 11-day ban.

During the period, a total of 486 mobile courts conducted 733 drives against violating Ilish fishing ban in Barisal division.

Shamsul Alam, divisional engineer of fishery department and duty officer of the control room opened in this connection at Barisal, gave the statistics.

Apart from giving punishments to the fishermen, 9.51 tonnes of Ilish, 47.87 lakh metres fishing nets worth Tk10.58 core and 13 fishing boats were seized during the period.

Bazlur Rashid, deputy director and divisional fishery officer, said the government had imposed the 11-day ban on catching, selling and transporting Ilish on October 5 across the country to ensure safe spawning.

As Ilish lays eggs in plenty during this period—Ashwin-Kartik, five days before and after Baro Purnima, the government imposed the restriction on catching the delicious fish in this period.

Bimal Das, district fishery officer (Ilish), said 124 fishermen were jailed, 246 fined Tk10 lakh and 370 cases lodged by 106 mobile courts during 195 drives against violating Ilish fishing ban in Barisal district till yesterday afternoon.
