A local leader of the ruling Awami League was hacked to death allegedly by his rivals in Bilashpur area of Jajira upazila of the district on Saturday.
The victim, Abdur Razzak Madbor, 55, was joint general secretary of Bilashpur Union unit AL. Police said local AL’s two groups, one led by Razzak, had been loggerheads for long over establishing supremacy in the area.
As sequel to the feud, the rivals kidnapped the leader from a Bilashpur bazar around 7:30pm and then they killed him by beating up and hacking.
Later, locals spotted the body under the Akond Kandi bridge in the area around 11:30pm and informed police.
When contacted, Bilashpur UP Chairman Abdul Kuddus Bepari echoed the voice of police. Jajira police station OC Ekram Ali Miah acknowledged the murder, telling they tried best to rescue Razzak after being informed about the abduction.
Shariatpur Assistant Superintendent of Police (Naria circle) Tanvir Haider said they detained a man for his alleged involvement in the killing and a case would be filed in this connection.
