Police yesterday recovered the body of a minor girl from a water drum kept in the toilet of a flat at Dhalpur in the capital’s Jatrabari area.
She was identified as Maimuna, 6, daughter of Wasa storekeeper Abdur Razzak.
Police also arrested Maimuna’s stepmother Sumaiya Islam Sharmin for allegedly killing the girl.
Jatrabari police station Officer-in-Charge Abani Shankar Kar said the body was recovered around 11am.
“The left wrist of the victim was found broken and her body also bore injury marks. We also detained her stepmother, who we suspect killed the girl out of vengeance,” he said.
According to family members, Maimuna’s grandmother Fulmoti, 60, noticed the body inside the drum around 9am when she went to toilet.
Hearing her cry, locals rushed in and called the police, said witnesses.
Maimuna lived with her father, stepmother and grandmother on the third floor of the building, locals said.
Quoting Fulmoti, locals added that the six-year-old would usually sleep with her grandmother but Sharmin asked her to sleep in her room on Thursday night as Razzak left for his village home on that day.
