Some islamist organisations have demanded that Abdul Latif Siddique be arrested and subjected to death on charges of his “derogatory’ remarks on hajj and tabligh.
They made the call while holding rallies and processions after Jum’a prayers yesterday.
Hefazat-e-Islam held their rally in front of Anderkillah Shahi Jame Masjid and took out a procession from there.
Olama Mashaekh, Towhidi Janata and some other organisations brought out processions from the same venue.
Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Chhatra Shibir did not hold any programme in protests against Latif’s remarks in the city yesterday. However, they were seen in the programmes held in protests against Latif’s remarks on hajj and tabligh.
Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge AKM Mohiuddin Selim however said Jamaat-Shibir people, posing as commoners, were seen taking part in the rallies and processions.
Hefazate Islam Organisational Secretary Azizul Haque Islamabadi said Latif is an apostate and enemy of Islam. He should be hanged for humiliating Islam by violating the law of the country.
On Sunday, Latif made comments on hajj while addressing a reception arranged by the Tangail expatriates in New York, USA, drawing scathing criticisms from several islamist parties and organisations in the country.
The islamist parties and organisations also demanded that he be removed from the government and the party.
Amid such criticisms and demands, the government, of which he is the information and telecommunications minister, and the party, of which he is a Presidium member, decided to throw him out.
Two Chittagong courts summoned him in four cases lodged for hurting religious sentiments of the people.
