A domestic help has reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the sunshade of a building in PC Culture Housing area under Adabor police station in the capital on Tuesday night.
The deceased, Muslima, 17, reportedly jumped from the sunshade of the top floor of the six-storied building.
Witnesses said the girl was seen sitting on the sunshade around 8pm. The locals and the owner of the flat, in which the girl used to work, requested her several times to climb down. But, she did not respond.
Later, the owner of the flat called the police and the firefighters.
Operation Officer of Adabor police station MIzan told the Dhaka Tribune: “Being informed, we rushed to the spot and found the girl sitting on a sunshade around 8pm. We also tried to talk to her in order to rescue her.”
“But, she did not respond to our calls and suddenly jumped from the sunshade around 8:30pm. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared her dead.”
The police official further said the reason behind the “suicide” could not be known immediately.
Muslima’s sister Setu, who also works at the same house, said: “I cannot remember any incident for which my sister can commit suicide. It is also impossible for her part to climb the sunshade of the top floor.”
The locals suspected that the girl was already dead when she was found sitting on the sunshade.
They claimed that she was unresponsive to the calls of the rescuers during the rescue attempt.
She did not even move even after falling on the yard from the sunshade, said witnesses.
The police was quizzing Setu and the caretaker of the house till filing the report around 11pm.
A Dhaka Tribune journalist was present at the police station during the questioning and she heard the conversation between the police and the family members of Muslima.
During the conversation, a police official said: “The girl might have died before she jumped.”
However, he later denied making any comment over the issue.
Mohammadpur Zone Assistant Commissioner of police Sheikh Rabiul Hasan visited the spot immediately after the incident.
He told the Dhaka Tribune that he reached the spot after the dead body was taken to the hospital and he was yet to be informed about the entire situation.
