Customs officials have seized five gold bars worth Tk30 lakh from Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong. One person, Nurul Azim, hailing from Raozan upazila of Chittagong, was detained in this connection.
Md Shahadat Hossain, assistant commissioner at the airport customs, told the Dhaka Tribune that Nurul had arrived at the airport by an Air Arabia flight around 9:30am.
"Five gold bars weighing 584 grams were found inside Nurul's luggage during airport security checks," he added.
The gold bars were handed over to Bangladesh Bank and Azim was sent to the Patenga police station.
Meanwhile, one more gold bar was seized from the handle of luggage of another passenger of the same flight.
However, the passenger was released after the seizure of the gold bar.
Under the existing law, a person can carry 200 grams of gold from abroad after paying necessary duty and highest two kilograms of gold by giving an early notice to the authorities concerned.
