A coconut trader in Keshabpur upazila claimed his rival businessman persuaded police to harass and torture him.
Mafizul Islam said police beat him up and scolded him at the local police station several times, and they did it at the instigation of trader Shahidul Islam.
“Police also demanded Tk2.30 lakh from me,” he claimed.
Officer-in-charge of Keshabpur police station Abdul Jalil, however, denied the charges. Addressing a press briefing at Jessore Press Club yesterday, Mafizul said Shahidul owed him Tk41,936, and collaborated with police to harass him as he refused to sell another truck of coconuts on credit.
“On February 26, police picked me up from my house and tortured me at their camp. I was harassed several times afterwards. My relatives and I went to the police station on June 1 in response to a summons issued on May 29 and they harassed me again,” he said.
