The Anti-Corruption Commission has taken the statements from nine police officials, including two assistant commissioners from different zones, in regards to its inquiry into the disappearance of 165 gold bars during an operation in the capital’s Banasree area.
ACC Deputy Director Jatan Kumar Roy took their statements at the anti-graft body's headquarters, its Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said while talking to reporters yesterday.
The officers are Motijheel Zone Assistant Commissioner Jewel Rana, Demra Zone Assistant Commissioner Mainul Islam, Inspector Abul Khayer Matubbar, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar Mia, Naiyek Md Shakhawat Hossain, constables AK Azad, Md Abul Hasan, Md Saiful Alam and Nayan Kumar.
The ACC on Thursday took the statements from Khilgaon zone Assistant Commissioner Md Iqbal Hossain, Sub-Inspectors Abdul Mannan, ANS Nuruzzaman, Masud Mia, M Rashedul Islam, and constables Md Delwar Hossain and Md Rahim on the same matter.
On March 13, a gang of smugglers abandoned 235 gold bars in a car in the capital’s Banasree area when they were being pursued by a patrol team. However, after searching through the vehicle, Rampura police claimed to have found only 70 bars inside.
Driver Samir Biswas and suspect Jahid Hossain were detained later after they went to the Rampur police station to bring back the car and told them that there were 235 gold bars in the car. Later an investigation was launched and a case was filed over the alleged theft of the gold bars.
On April 1, the Detective Branch of police in separate drives arrested three policemen and their informer in possession of 149 gold bars from Dhaka city, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Bogra.
