The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday recovered a 10kg shell of 75MM Recoilless Rifle in an abandoned state, which is believed to have been used during the liberation war in Chapainawabganj.
Quoting witnesses, Rab 5 Captain Major Kamruzzaman Pavel said workers found the shell while digging a drain to remove water from a person called Ekramul Haq’s mango orchard beside Tohakhana, a shrine, at Shibganj upazila in the morning.
“After being informed, we recovered the shell at around 10am. It has been damaged a lot, but can explode anytime and so it has been kept cautiously at the scene.” He added that Bangladesh army had been using this type of shell till about five years ago.
The Rab has left the scene after leaving the shell in Shibganj police custody.
Shibganj police station Officer-in-Charge Ashiqur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have contacted Bogra army for disposal of the shell. It will be destroyed after they send a bomb disposal unit.”
Until filing of this report around 8pm, no bomb disposal unit from Bogra cantonment arrived at the scene.
