Tk2.80 crore gold seized at Chittagong airport

Customs officials have detained one person with 56 gold bars worth Tk2.80 crore at Shah Amanat International Airport.

Detainee Shah Hossain arrived at the airport on a Dubai flight around 3:30pm.

Tapan Kanti Chakrabarti, assistant commissioner of Customs at the airport, the gold bars were seized from the anklets of Shah Hossain.

He said the gold bars weighing 6.50 kilogrammes were handed over to Bangladesh Bank.

A case was lodged with Patenga police station in this connection, added the AC.

Existing law allows a person to carry highest 200 grammes of gold from abroad paying necessary duty at the airport while the passenger can bring highest two kilogrammes of gold by giving early notice to the authorities concerned and paying duty, according to a circular of Bangladesh Bank.
