An alleged arms trader has been shot in a gunfight with police at Purba Kulgao area under Baizid police station in Chittagong city early Tuesday.

The injured arms trader, Manjurul Alam, 30, was admitted into Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Babul Bonik, officer-in-charge (OC) of Baizid police station.

A 7.65 pistol was recovered from his possession, he said.

Bonik said acting on tip-off a petrol team of Baizid police station intercepted a CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying Manjurul at Kalarpul area of Purba Kulgao at around 12am.

Sensing the presence of police, Manjurul opened fire on the on duty petrol police men, said the OC adding that in retaliation, police also opened fire on the arms trader, leaving him bullet-hit.

Later, police seized the firearms made in USA from his possession and sent him to CMCH, added the OC.

A case was lodged with Baizid police in this regard under Arms Act.
