Update : 14 Sep 2014, 02:33 PM

A mentally challenged woman has been beaten to death by her next door dwellers claiming her as a child lifter in Puraton Railway Station area of Chittagong city.

The deceased was identified as Khaleda Begum, 45, of Mymensingh district, lived at a makeshift house on the station premises with her husband Wahed Ali.

Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Kotwali circle) said: “Jamal and five others, also floating residents of the area, swooped on her with sticks at around 8am on Sunday accusing her of stealing his three-year son.”

Seeing this, a local hawker of the rail station’s adjoining shoe market informed police and rescued the victim.

The law enforcers caught four attackers including Jamal red handed but two other men went into hiding, he said.

The official said: “The woman was declared dead at Chittagong Medical College Hospital at around 12pm. The dead body was sent to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.”

He said mentally challenged Khaleda took Jamal’s child into a place a night before but she could not recall where she kept the kid.

However, the kid was found on early Sunday but Jamal treated the woman a child lifter and started to beat her with some other of his next doors.

A case was lodged with Kotwali police station in this connection.

Later, Kotwali police arrested Jamal, 22, Ferdousi, 40, Yiasmin Akhter Tuni, 25, and Paul Deb, 35. They were taken to the police station for interrogation.

“Police are looking into the matter,” added the AC Kotwali.
