Detectives on the early hours of yesterday arrested a person in connection with the abduction of a girl and murder of a security guard in the capital’s Uttara area in June this year.
“On information, police arrested Mohammad Sohel Rana, 29, on Tuesday late night,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Saidur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
During interrogation, Sohel, who was picked up from Bhatara area of the capital, told police that their team leader Shafiq alias Apon, along with Shimul, Rony and Al-Amin, used to roam around different areas of the capital in a white Toyota Premio car and looted valuables from people.
On July 3, Rony called Sohel around 9:30pm and asked him to meet in Kuril Flyover area. After arriving at the spot, he found other members of the gang present in their private car.
Later, they went to Gulshan and picked up a girl from there. However, they released her after she identified herself as a reporter of a private TV channel.
“After that, they went to Uttara with the intention to mug people. However, they stopped the vehicle after noticing a young girl at Uttara Sector 4 and tried to pick her up in the car forcefully. When locals of the area came to her rescue, Apon fired blank shots at them which killed Mohammad Liakat Hossain Liton, 38, a security guard of a nearby residence.
Rana also confessed that another youth tried to create a barricade but he personally attacked him with sharp weapons. The gang then went to Kaliganj of Gazipur with the girl.
“Apon sexually abused the girl there in the car and we all guarded the area,” Sohel told police.
Next day, they entered the capital again early in the morning and left the girl in Uttara, said sources at the DB police.
Rana further said Apon was killed in a gunfight with DB police in the capital Hatirjheel area on July 17. He and other members of the gang, however, managed to escape.
After the gunfight, DB police recovered one pistol, two rounds of bullets, three rounds of bullet shells, three cell phone sets and the white Toyota Premio car.
“Additional Deputy Commissioner of DB Abdul Ahad and Senior Assistant Police Commissioner SM Nazmul Haque conducted the operation,” added Saidur Rahman.
