RAB members yesterday arrested a sub-inspector (SI) of the Special Branch (SB) of police and three others, and seized an illegal firearm from his possession from Uttara in the capital.
“The SI was identified as Mohammad Asaduzzaman. The three others were Saiful Islam, 30, Mahmudul Hasan, 24, and Moshiur Rahman, 26,” Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud, commanding officer of RAB 1, said.
On receiving intelligence, RAB officials arrested them from an under-construction building in Sector 6 of Uttara around 2.30pm, said Lt Col Tuhin.
He said RAB officials seized a foreign 9mm pistol, one magazine, three bullets and a motorcycle from Asaduzzaman.
Investigators discovered that Asaduzzaman is an SB officer assigned to the Uttara area of the capital. Asaduzzaman is reportedly involved in the area’s Chhatra League politics.
The three other arrestees, also from Uttara, studied at Uttara College. They are all involved in illegal arms dealing, according to RAB officials.
Col Ziaul Ahsan, additional director general of RAB, said his officials set up a sting operation by posing as arms buyers. RAB officials then caught them in the act of illegally trying to sell the weapon, he said. Mahbubur Rahman, additional superintendent of police SB, said he was aware of the matter.
“Actually we are not sure about what happened here and we are trying to understand the incident,” Mahbubur said.
As of the filing of this report at 10pm, the arrestee was in RAB custody at its Uttara office and no case had been filed in this regard.
