Probe body claims Jubo League men were involved

Update : 07 Sep 2014, 08:18 PM

Sources in the Detective Branch of Police have claimed that investigators probing the Khilgaon father-son shooting and mugging case found a Jubo League leader’s involvement in the incident.

The suspect is an organising secretary of Jubo League (south) committee while other members of the group behind the crime also belong to Jubo League, the sources said.

On Thursday, Israil Hossain and his son Sharif Hossain were shot at Goran of Khilgaon in the capital city, and the shooters also took away Tk48 lakh from the duo.

DB sources said Shairf and Israil, owner of Universal Money Exchange, were carrying the money while returning home from Adamjee Court Money Exchange office in Motijheel on the day of the incident. The muggers, five to six in number, knew the information beforehand as they had been on the trail of the currency trader for a while.

A DB official said the father and the son were walking home having parked the vehicle at a building near Shantipur School as their own residence do not have a car park. The whole area was dark because of a power outage.

Riding two motorbikes, the muggers intercepted the duo and attempted to snatch the briefcase where the money was. As Israil and Sharif resisted, the miscreants shot them and took the bag, leaving the son dead on the spot.

Investigators during the probe came to know that the power cut in the area was not a scheduled one. They questioned the staff at the local power office to gather more information.

DB sources said the Jubo League leader, who lives in that area, would also be interrogated.

Jahangir Hossain Matubbor, deputy commissioner of DB (west), said the perpetrators who had a hand in the crime had been identified and officials were also investigating whether the power cut was stage-managed.

The criminals hopefully would be brought to book shortly, he added.

None was arrested in this connection till yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, Sharif’s body yesterday was taken to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation to let Israil, who is undergoing treatment there, would be able to see his son’s face for the last time before burial.

The body was kept at the Birdem Hospital freezer and Israil wished to be present at the burial but doctors did not release him, saying he needed to be at the hospital for a few more days.
