The authorities of Mitford Hospital have suspended Rafiqul Islam Sujon, an intern doctor, for allegedly physically assaulting a nurse.
Director of the hospital Brig Gen Zakir Hasan confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
The injured nurse was admitted to casualty ward of the hospital.
Jasim, general secretary of Bangladesh Diploma Nurses’ Association, said around 1:30pm, Dr Sujon and senior nurse Bakul Rani Das engaged in an altercation at the labour ward. Rafiqul ordered her a task which she refused to carry out saying that she had other work at hand.
At one point, Sujon started beating up Rani mercilessly, said Jasim.
Hearing the news, nurses of the hospital brought out a procession on the premises.
Nurses Movement Committee at Mitford Hospital yesterday gave a three-day ultimatum to the hospital authorities demanding cancellation of Sujon’s registration, bringing him to book and taking departmental action against him.
They also threatened work abstention for the next three days and go for tougher movement if the demands were not met by then.
A three-member committee led by child department head Lutful Kabir was formed to investigate the incident, said the director.
Denying the allegation to beating Rani, Dr Sujon said Rani had engaged in a quarrel with Dr Ferdous while they were sitting in the doctor’s room.
“She came with a few of her colleagues and started scolding Dr Ferdous. At one stage, we tried to get her out of the room but she fell down and broke her glasses and got injured,” he claimed.
