Eyes of a college student were gouged out by miscreants in Babuganj upazila of Barisal on Thursday afternoon.
The victim was Rakib Hossain, 18, a student of Babuganj Degree College and the son of Md Selim alias Langra Selim from Baherchar village under Babuganj upazila of the district.
Father of the victim said local people recovered Rakib, whose hands and legs were tied, from near Khoyratir Khal and informed him around 3pm. He assumed the incident was an outcome of an old rivalry.
The victim was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) around 4pm.
Dr Amitav Biswas, the emergency medical officer of SBMCH, informed that the critically injured victim, with one eye gouged out and the other one severely injured, was immediately admitted to the eye-unit of the hospital.
Dr Mokhlesur Rahman, assistant registrar of the eye-unit, said the unconscious patient was transferred to Dhaka in the evening for better treatment. The doctor feared that both of his eyes might have been destroyed completely.
Sub-inspector of Babuganj police station Jafar Khan said a youth named as Rafik was stabbed on Wednesday night in the area and the incident of eye-gouging may have connection with that incident.
Police started investigation and they would interrogate the victim when his condition improves, the SI added.
