A local Awami League leader was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Lavlu Sarkar, 40, a member of Charghat Upazila Awami League, and son of late Wazed Ali of Baduria village in the upazila.
The police rescued and took him to the upazila health complex where the attending doctors declared him dead. Later, his body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
The police first presumed that he was injured in a road accident and later took him to the hospital. But the autopsy report showed that he was shot dead.
Abdul Momin, cousin of the deceased, said the incident took place around 9:00 pm when Lavlu was going to Baneshwar by his motorcycle.
Locals found Lavlu lying on Charghat-Baneshwar Road and informed the police of the incident. Later, patrol police took him to upazila health complex where the doctors declared him dead.
The officer-in-charge of Charghat model police station said initially, they thought it to be a road accident, but the postmortem report showed that he was killed by miscreants.
The police are investigating the matter, the OC added.
