A Juba League leader was hacked to death by a gang of assailants in Ishwardi upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam Lablu, 37, general secretary of Pakshi union parishad unit of Juba League, son of late Jhoru Mondal of Ruppur village of the upazila.
According to sources, Lablu was returning home riding motorcycle at 12am after finishing his contractor’s work at Ruppur Nuclear Power Project.
Miscreants indiscriminately chopped him tying with rope on the road near Pakshi Railway Station and took the bike, leaving Lablu critically injured, the sources added. On information, relatives rescued Lablu and rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Confirming the matter, Ishwardi police station Officer-In-Charge Biman Kumar Das said:“Police visited the spot.”
Hearing the incident, agitated people put barricade on the Ishwardi-Khustia highway in Ruppur Pakar Mor area bringing a halt to the communication between Southern and Northern regions.
They withdrew the barricade after five hours.
