The local police yesterday arrested three suspected fraudsters whose gang pocketed about Tk60 lakh from the job aspirants in the name of recruiting them into the much-hyped Padma bridge project.
Jajira police station sources said they caught the cheaters – Atikur Rahman of Netrokuna, Mahbubur Rahman of Naogaon and Rafiqul Islam Rana of Khulna – from a rented house in Nauduba area.
Police and the affected job seekers sources said one Sikder Trading Company allegedly located in the capital’s Gulistan area on July 25 made a recruitment advertisement of Padma bridge construction project on a bangla daily and thereby several hundred people, particularly from the country’s northern districts, applied to the job.
On August 15, the company issued appointment letters stating monthly salary of Tk37,000 to 108 workers in return for Tk50,000-60,000 as bribe and directed them to join work 12 days later.
However, the workers noticed of being victim of fraudulence after visiting their workplace as quoted in the letter and they informed police.
Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ram Chandra Das said there was information that a gang of the job tricksters brought more than 100 workers in house of Naudoba area a couple of days ago, following which they made the arrest.
The ringleader of the gang has been out of trace while the legal action would be taken against the arrested, the DC continued.
