Husband throws acid on wife for dowry in Gaibandha

Update : 23 Aug 2014, 08:11 PM

A woman was rescued by her parents on Tuesday night from her residence in Poschim Shinga village in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj upazila, three days after her husband threw acid on her.

The victim, Monju Ara Momi, 25, suffered severe burns on her entire body from the attack and was in a critical condition when she was rescued, said her father Abdul Motin.

He said her daughter, originally from Khiribari village in the same upazila, was married off to Abu Sufian of Poschim Shinga village three years ago, with a dowry of Tk70,000 in cash and household furniture.

After a year of marriage, Sufian started demanding more dowry from Momi, and he frequently beat her, Motin said.

Last Sunday, on the night of the attack, Sufian made the same demand for dowry and told Momi to go to her parents’ house. When Momi refused to do so, an angered Sufian started beating her, and at one point, he threw acid at her.

Though Momi suffered burns on her body, Sufian locked her up in the house to keep her from getting medical help, her father said.

Hearing her cries, the neighbours informed her parents, but when they went to see her on Wednesday morning, Sufian did not let them in.

Later at night, with the locals’ help, Motin rescued his severely injured daughter from the house and took her to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex.

Dr Shahinul Islam Mondol, residential medical officer at the health complex, said Momi was in a critical condition when she was brought in.

She was given primary treatment at the health complex, but was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment, he said.

However, Momi’s family took her to Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital instead, where she is currently under treatment, said her family.

Momi’s brother filed a case with Gobindaganj police station in this regard on Thursday.

Police said Sufian and his mother were in hiding. Zahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj police station, said they were trying their best to bring the culprits to book and would give all kinds of legal support to Momi.
