Update : 21 Aug 2014, 10:06 PM

A madrasa student has orchestrated a kidnapping drama to pocket a huge amount of money from his expatriate father.

Police came to know about the plot concocted by Mohammad Shahed, 17, after an investigation.

During a confessional statement before a court, Shahed, who is a Class VII student of Oaichia Sunnia Dakhil Madrasa, said he and his friends had formed a plot to obtain money from his father, who is an Oman expatriate, because his father was not providing him with sufficient money.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf of Panchlaish circle in Chittagong Metropolitan Police said as per the plan, on August 13, Shahed had gone missing from his residence in the Char Rangamatia area under Chandgaon police station in the port city.

After his disappearance, his friends, disguised as kidnappers, demanded Tk50 lakh from his family in exchange for his freedom. Later, both the parties settled the issue at Tk5 lakh.

Hearing the news of his son’s kidnapping, Shahed’s father Hossain Mia came back to the country from Oman and lodged a case with Chandgaon police station.

When police strengthened its vigilance, Shahed returned to his residence on Tuesday night and said that the kidnappers had released him because of the police’s actions.

But police were not convinced of his claim and nabbed Shahed’s friend Mizan for his alleged involvement with the kidnapping.

Both Shahed and Mizan were interrogated and they confessed their plot, the AC said.
